TO THROW A GUN
Aston moves into the back of the helicopter to find a seat. Li Yuan stays up front with Gun, apparently determined to make the young man sweat bullets. She makes him uncomfortable and she knows it.
Well, if Gun wants to be with their daughter, heâs going to have to get used to Li Yuan. She isnât going to be easy on him. Aston doesnât even want to think what she might be like when Taro gets a girlfriend.
Thereâs a bench along one side of the chopper. Unfortunately, the only seat is on the end, next to Eugene. He sits down next to the scientist, not caring that his girth causes the other man to have to slide over and make room.
On the other side of Eugene are Zed, Billy, and the young man named Nate. Zed sits hunched forward, elbows resting on his knees. He looks calm as he gazes around the helicopter.
Nate looks to be in his early twenties. Heâs tall and lanky, not so different from Billy, but also strong and capable. Thereâs a certain air to him that Aston recognizes. This young man has lived in the wild.
âWhere are you from?â he asks Nate.
âI grew up in and around Silicon Valley.â
Purposely vague. Aston sometimes believes in respecting privacy, but not today. Nate is the only person on the chopper he doesnât know a thing about, and the lives of his kids are on the line.
âYou didnât grow up in a compound, did you?â
âNah.â Nate leans back against the bench, letting his long legs stretch out.
âYouâre a drifter.â
âI was. Iâve lived with Gun for the past four years.â
Ah. The pieces click together. Gun rescued him from the wilderness. Aston adds Nate to the list of people who can be trusted. So long as Gunâs interests align with Sulanâs, Nate will be someone they can count on.
Satisfied with Nate, Aston shifts his attention to Eugene. His mood instantly sours.
âWhy did you do it?â The question comes out before Aston can think better of it.
âDo what?â Eugene rubs at his eyes beneath his glasses.
âYou threw the gun out for me. And the extra magazine.â
This bothers Aston. A lot.
Eugene is an obstacle between him and his family. He wants the man out of his life. If he wasnât needed for Sanctuary, Aston would have left his ass in Frisco.
The feelings between them are mutual. Except that Aston isnât important the way Eugene is, not to the big picture. He said as much to him. So why did he help him when he didnât have to?
âYou want to know why I helped you?â Eugene says.
âYou didnât have to do what you did.â
Eugene gives him a look of disgust. âLi Li loves you. You are Sulanâs biological father. I might not like you, but that doesnât give me the right to keep you from them, especially when it would hurt them both.â He folds his arms over his chest, giving Aston a sullen glare. âDonât think this means Iâm going to crawl away with my tail between my legs.
